Understanding Your Doula Benefits

Insurance & Coverage

Eligible Medi-Cal members may receive pregnancy, birth, and postpartum doula support through their health plan. Veil to Vessel helps families verify eligibility, understand available visits, and identify any plan-specific steps before services begin.

Eligible Kaiser Permanente Medi-Cal members may have access to covered doula support based on plan requirements and service availability.

Blue Shield Promise Health Plan

Veil to Vessel's Blue Shield Promise agreement becomes effective October 1, 2026. Eligible members may request services beginning on or after the applicable effective date.

Health-plan participation does not automatically confirm an individual member’s eligibility or available benefits. Coverage, service area, provider availability, and plan requirements are verified before care begins.

What the Medi-Cal Doula Benefit May Include

For eligible members, the standard Medi-Cal doula benefit generally includes:

  • One initial 90-minute visit
  • Up to eight prenatal and postpartum visits combined
  • Support during labor and delivery, including cesarean birth
  • Support following miscarriage, stillbirth, or abortion
  • Up to two extended postpartum visits lasting as long as three hours each
  • Up to nine additional postpartum visits with a separate written recommendation from an authorized provider

Covered services may generally be provided during pregnancy and for up to 12 months after pregnancy ends. Prenatal and postpartum visits may be available through telehealth or in person, depending on the service, health-plan requirements, member needs, and provider availability.

Coverage is subject to current Medi-Cal eligibility and the member’s health-plan requirements. Benefits should be verified before services begin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at contact@veiltovessel.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Most eligible Medi-Cal members do not have an out-of-pocket cost for covered doula services. However, eligibility, share-of-cost obligations, and benefit requirements must be reviewed before services begin. We will explain any known financial responsibility before scheduling.

A separate doctor’s referral is generally not required to begin standard Medi-Cal doula services because a standing recommendation applies. However, up to nine additional postpartum visits require a separate written recommendation signed by an authorized provider.

Our team will help explain when the additional recommendation form is needed and what must be completed before those visits can begin.

Potentially, yes. Medi-Cal doula coverage can extend for up to 12 months after pregnancy ends. Your eligibility, delivery date, prior doula-service use, and remaining benefits must be verified.

No. Submitting the form gives Veil to Vessel permission to begin reviewing your information. Services are considered insurance-covered only after eligibility and the applicable benefit pathway have been confirmed.

Tell your doula as soon as possible. Coverage must be verified under the new plan before additional services are provided or scheduled as insurance-covered.

Health plans use identifying information such as your full name, date of birth, and member identification number to locate your enrollment record and confirm eligibility and available benefits.

Veil to Vessel will explain what we are able to verify and whether another service pathway may be appropriate. We will not schedule a service as insurance-covered when coverage has not been confirmed, and any separate payment arrangement must comply with the applicable health-plan requirements.
